Scents + Memories

I am someone who feels that scents are related to memory that always have a story to tell. When I first started the business, one of the first few scents I introduced was this scent called Tobacco Vanilla. This scent reminded me a lot of my late grandfather whom we lovingly called "Pak Shoh". Pak Shoh was someone who enjoyed his occasional moments of smoking pipe. I remember he used to keep his tobacco leaves and pipe in a drawer of an old dark brown cupboard in the dining area. Pak Shoh was a simple man. Loving, caring and patient. He used to spend some mornings of the week to clean his pipe and I used to just look at him getting all focused as cleaned it. Occasional nags from Mak Shoh (my grandma) reminding him to kick this habit of smoking. Patient and loving as he was, he will just smile and continue. Another thing he loved was watching wrestling, simple joy of watching men fake thrashing. Another habit that Mak Shoh never liked but still sat and watched next to him laughing off the moves.
When I first tested this scent in Melbourne, I remembered my immediate reaction was - ahhh Pak Shoh! So I decided to pour a few batches of this candle. Not because he smelled like it! It's because of the memory that comes with it.
Simple moments that trigger memories. I find the scent relaxing and calming, calm as he was. Nothing intrusive or bold. My bet is on the presence of vanilla that tones it a lot. I almost renamed the scent as Badang as that's his name. Yes, BADANG! Would've been quite a story if I did, wouldn't it?
